Tea: The Most Natural Way to Lose Weight and Feel Better

For all intents and purposes, my use of the word “tea” in this post is meant to include herbal teas as well as tea (camellia sinensis) itself. Second to water, tea is the most commonly consumed beverage in the world, and for good reason. Teas have been proven to have more medicinal and physiological benefits than I have time to list, so to simplify things, let’s just say that plants and herbs have various nutritional properties that our bodies need. By drinking these herbs in a tea form, we directly infuse these nutrients into our bodies. On top of those benefits, adding tea to your diet may curb your appetite, flush out your system, and boost your daily quality of life. Beside this it's a natural way to lose weight.

There are many teas available. Here are five I think everyone should include in their diet.

You Asked For It: Healthy Snacks To Keep Around The House

Apples & Peanut Butter: Slice an organic apple (experiment with different varieties) and spread with peanut or almond butter. (Check labels for salt/sugar content; the less of both, the better it is for you!)

Avocado and Toast (or Wasa crackers): Add red onions, or season as you like. Check fiber/sugar content.

Dark Chocolate: Check cacao content; the higher, the better. Try and get at least 72 %. You can even melt it and dip berries in it!

Pomegranate-Rice Pudding: This is a fun way to get this great fruit into your diet.  Rice pudding from Trader Joe's is a great treat.  I'm a big proponent of organic or antibiotic/hormone-free dairy products.  (For a healthier alternative, use brown rice.)

Greek Yogurt: Pick your favorite brand—there are so many good ones out there—then dress it up with whatever you like; honey makes it an especially sweet treat. The brands I like are Fage, Oikos, Chobani.

Fiber Full Fruits and Veggies:  Half a serving of fruits and veggies have 6 grams of fiber! They are a delicious way to get all this nutrition in.

Fresh Berries: (organic and fresh if available;  otherwise frozen organic would be preferred) —for dipping  organic whipped cream

Vodka Pizza: Choose your favorite sauce (on the healthier side, of course) and high-fiber wrap or pita.  Bake until warm, then spread with  sauce and layer with fresh mozzarella. Bake again until cheese is melted.

Frozen Smoothies: These are great for any time of day. Keep a variety of frozen organic berries in the freezer. Adding spinach is a good way to get in a healthy green vegetable.  You can use yogurt and ice or fresh-squeezed juice as a base.

Things You Should Know Before Your Next Doctor’s Visit: Be Your Own Health Advocate

How to Be Your Own Health Advocate
Does this sound familiar? It’s been five minutes since you’ve left your doctor’s office. You’ve been given a list of diagnoses and treatments of which you understood little and remember even less.  If you’ve felt this way before, you are not alone. The reality is that doctors and patients often speak two completely different languages and my job as a PA is to bridge that gap.  When I first started a blog, I had asked my seventy or so readers to let me know what they would enjoy reading about most. At first it seemed that Healthy Snacks were the clear winner, but as I gained more readers, “Things Your Doctor Forgot to Tell You” became the front-runner. I've spent a few weeks mulling this one over. It’s a tough topic to write about because, as I said a moment ago, you and your doctor speak two different languages. If I were to tell you what he forgot to, it would still leave you right where you started—confused. Instead, I thought I would take a different approach and arm you with things you should know before your next visit to the doctor.

Things You Should Know

1)  What are you eating? Too often doctors neglect to ask you what it is that you’ve been eating. In my field in particular, I find that on a regular basis someone will come in complaining of an ailment we can directly link to their diet—many days and tests later. An open dialogue about what you’ve been eating may seriously expedite your next doctor visit.

2)  What are the side effects of the medication you’ve been prescribed? I’m sure you’ve all seen the drug commercials that end with someone rattling off a long list of side effects of a medication. I’m also sure it’s far less common for you to hear such a list of side effects from your doctor. As with most things in life, it’s important that you should be your own advocate. Always ask your doctor what the most common side effects of the medications being prescribed are, what to do if you get them, the importance of the medication as well as any alternative modes of treatment.  I’m not saying it’s important to avoid medication, but to understand what it is you will be on.

3)  Come prepared. Too often I find that when a patient comes in for a specific ailment, they are flustered and have a difficult time expressing all their thoughts. I suggest that prior to your visit, you write down a list of what’s bothering you, when it started, what you’ve treated it with thus far, and what makes it better or worse. A simple, organized patient is far easier to diagnose than a flustered one.

4)  You have the right to retain copies of your medical records. Your medical records may be a well-guarded secret, but the great secret is that they are always available to you. One of the best ways that you can advocate for yourself is to be sure and request copies of each test you have done. Keep a master file of your own and bring a copy of your tests with you to your next doctor’s visit. In this age of specialists, knowing what tests have already been done and what previous doctors have already learned will help us avoid unnecessary testing as well as give us the ability to provide you with better comprehensive care.

5)  Hold the caffeine.  Drinking caffeine within an hour of your doctor’s appointment can elevate your blood pressure and heart rate, providing us with a false positive and possibly an unneeded scare.

6)  Other important things to note. Simple things like how much sleep you get, how much water you drink, and how much you exercise are incredibly important for us to know. If you aren’t asking these questions, be sure and give us the answers anyway. Your sleep, diet, fitness, and water intake all may affect you in more ways than one can really understand without spending years in school studying it.

As I always say, know more—feel better.

The Plus Size Minidress- Know Yourself

knowing plus size minidress
The plus size minidress. What is it and why do we want one?
Well the minidress is just a version of the miniskirt, it's simple. But instead of being a skirt it's a dress. The whole point of the minidress or miniskirt is to show off the legs.

Well that's not quite accurate. The miniskirt originated in the 1960s. It was made popular by Mary Quent in London and soon became a worldwide fashion. But elven then the miniskirt wasn't as short as some of the miniskirts and minidresses of today, it often came just above the knee, which at that time was extremely daring.

But then it wasn't just about showing off the legs, it was about women's right to dress how they wanted, it was as much a feminist thing as a style thing.
But now it's often about showing off the legs.

So before you head on out in a plus size minidress have a think about whether your legs are one of your best features, if not then maybe dress some other way that highlights your best features rather than those that are not your best. This applies to all plus size clothes, not just women's plus size mini dresses. Buy to accentuate your best features.

If your legs aren't your best features don't despair, we'll bet your man likes seeing them anyway. So go crazy shopping for that perfect plus size minidress and wear it for him at home. He'll love it.

Why The Junk Food Addiction is So Hard To Kick

I took the last couple of months off from writing to do some research on food as medicine. Shortly I’ll write on a handful of new studies and research that everyone should be aware of. At the moment, though, I thought I would get back into the swing of things by answering a question I’d received while on hiatus.

You Also Can Read This Article : Healthy Snacks To Keep Around The House

Why is this addiction so hard to kick?

There was a point in our recent history when most Americans would have agreed that giving up smoking or a drug addiction would be entirely more difficult than giving up McDonald’s. Today, as I’m sure it’s obvious to most, the tide is turning. As more and more Americans find themselves struggling to lose weight, the plight of the overweight has become accepted. While I have absolutely no research to back this up, I would venture to say that the vast majority of people that quit eating junk food relapse. So why have we, an intelligent society, one that created math, antibiotics, and the Internet, found no way to successfully contend against junk food in our battle with the bulge?
The answer is quite simple and probably very surprising to most.

The fact is that we’ve evolved innovatively faster than we’ve evolved internally. While human evolution is only observable over thousands or hundreds of thousands of years, our industrialization of food all took place within the last 150 years. So while in reality we may have access to supermarkets and drive-through fast-food restaurants, our brains are hardwired to think we’re still hunters and gatherers, food is scarce, and famine is coming.

To survive famine our brains began to signal us, letting us know when a food source was high in calories and fats. By eating as much as we could manage, we would then be able to store these calories as body fat and use them for energy when no food was available. Meat in particular was more scarcely available and, as it may have taken days to hunt and only hours to spoil, our brain takes its time before telling us we’re full when there is meat available, allowing us to push the limits of what we can actually eat. The real problem is that today we have more food than we know what to do with, an instinct to eat as much as we can, and an evolutionary trait that sends it right to our thighs. All of this makes high-calorie junk food a hard addiction to kick, as well as a health problem leading to our destruction.

The solution isn’t as easy as waiting for evolution to catch up. That day may very well come, but first we’d have to survive that long and weight-related health problems are a huge obstacle standing in our way. It won’t be easy, but we have to start by recognizing that overeating and obesity are entirely normal yet, unfortunately, very unhealthy. From there we can try and rewire our brains manually and recognize consciously when it’s directed us to do something that may kill us. We evolved to survive and now we must survive if we ever hope to evolve.

The Maintenance Guide For The Adult Body

Guide For maintain The Adult Body

When my family and friends mention that they're sick or going to the doctor, I list off a number of screenings to get and questions to ask -- on top of what they could have done to prevent themselves from getting sick in the first place. From this point ,on I will just link them to the following post.

Simple Steps to Maintaining Your Health:

1) First and foremost, it's important to establish a relationship with a primary care physician as you get older. From the day your child, is born you have a pediatrician looking out for them; afford yourself the same luxury.

2) Know your family history! This is an incredibly important step to take if the option is available.  Our understanding of genetic syndromes is growing rapidly, and with each passing day we develop effective ways to screen for and even treat conditions you may not have been aware you had. Figure out who had what and at what age they were diagnosed. I suggest keeping a log of this information that can be passed down and added to for generations to come.

3) Clairvoyance is not taught in medical school.  If you’ve been hospitalized or have had any procedures done in the last year, bring the records or reports to your next doctor visit. Keeping your doctor in the loop is more than half the battle.

4) Ask questions and seek answers. You may want to discuss vaccinations that are appropriate for you and consider the necessity of these vaccines and their purpose. Your doctor should be honest with you, but if you don’t start the dialog he won’t predict your concerns. See number three if you don’t understand why.

Before I segue to the part of this list that doesn’t involve your doctor, here is a list of screenings you can expect to need sooner or later. Discuss them with your doctor and understand when you are due for what.

5) Exercise regularly. I realize this is something that you hear all the time, but the importance becomes more evident every day.  Regular exercise does more than just make you slimmer. It helps prevent the top causes of death, such as obesity, heart disease, and cancer.

6) Sleep! It will keep you looking younger, feeling better, and most importantly, will allow your internal organs to function at their best.

7) Skin is your most exposed organ as it acts as protection for the rest of your body.  Keep it safe, so it can keep you safe.

8) Listen to your body. The human body is an incredibly complex machine with all sorts of warning mechanisms meant to let you know when something is wrong. Neglecting these warnings often leads to worsening conditions, including chronic pain or illness. It’s easier to treat minor conditions than to deal with the aftermath of not treating them.

9) Eat well. Very simply, what you put in your body is what you can expect to get out of it.

10) Take time to enjoy your family, friends, and community. Research shows that those who feel like they belong live healthier longer lives.

Tips for Buying Plus Size Maternity Clothes

Do You Need Plus Size Maternity Clothes?

Do I need plus size maternity clothes is the first question to ask yourself when considering your pregnancy wardrobe. Because not all women need specialist maternity clothes. Many women do need plus size maternity clothing, but not all.

Generally speaking larger women do not tend to gain as much weight during pregnancy as smaller women. The bump doesn't show as much for many women and so the need for plus size maternity clothes is reduced. Often we can get by buying our clothes a size or two larger rather than buying plus size maternity clothes which we will probably not wear after our pregnancy, thereby saving some money.

Wearing slightly bigger clothes tends to work better for those who are around size 24 or larger. These women tend to gain less weight during pregnancy. Those between sizes sixteen to 22 tend to put on more weight as a proportion of their body weight than larger women and therefore may be more likely to need plus size maternity clothes.
Tips for Buying Plus Size Maternity Clothes

The need for maternity clothing usually arises around months two or three for those of us who will need to buy maternity clothes. At this time you waist begins to expand as baby grows and you will start to feel tightness from any clothes you wear, or at least those with slightly tighter waists. Other changes in the body may also mean that the way our clothes fit us will change, not just for our waist but also for other areas of our bodies such as arms and legs.

More and more there is a wide range of choice in plus size maternity clothes. The Internet has meant that clothing producers are more able to offer a wide range of maternity clothing in plus sizes. Good quality yet cheap plus size maternity clothes are widely available online. Maternity clothing is now a fashion item.

And it's not just your outer clothing that you need to consider. You will almost certainly need to consider buying one or more plus size maternity bras. (Two is better.) A good plus size maternity bra is a very wise purchase. During pregnancy most women increase in bra size, often by one full size or more in both cup and band. And of course a good nursing bra has many advantages when feeding your new baby.

Plus Size Maternity Clothes Buying Tips:

What Size Should I Buy?

When you're looking to buy maternity clothing look to buy the maternity clothes in your pre pregnancy size. Properly designed maternity clothes make good use of both material and design to allow for the extra weight and size of your growing belly, but shouldn't differ that much in size. If in doubt buy one size up.

What About Intimates?

For intimates such as plus size maternity panties choose loose rather than tight and opt for a cotton or cotton blend material. This is more comfortable and also better for women who may be prone to yeast fungal infections.

What Materials Are Best?

Always consider what material the clothes are made from. For outer clothes select stretchier fabrics such as Lycra or Spandex which allow your body to grow without showing. And they look good too.

Don't Expect To Be Wearing Drab:

And don't assume that because you're pregnant you have to spend half a year looking drab. There is a whole range of new choices in plus size maternity clothing. Whether it's formal wear, swimwear, lingerie, business wear or even wedding dresses, there is something to suit every plus size woman.

Don't Be Shy And Retiring:

Don't be shy and retiring about being pregnant. Many women feel a little embarrassed about pregnancy, that they should hide themselves away for 6 or 7 months until the event is over. There is no need to feel like that. Pregnancy is a time to celebrate, and only occurs infrequently in any womans life. Celebrate it and feel great about it, and dress accordingly. Look good in great maternity clothing, and you'll feel great. Get out and have a good time, there'll be plenty of time at home when baby arrives.

Be Broadminded:

Don't stick with the styles you wear now, pregnancy may dictate some changes of taste. For example many women don't like baby doll shirts. You know the ones, empore waistline just below the bust, flared below. They can work extremely well as maternity clothes. Don't limit your choices by your current wardrobe.

And talk to your friends. Many women discard their maternity clothes once baby arrives. You may have access to more clothes than you think, if you're prepared to borrow.
